Nutmeg's history in the region dates back to the early 15th century when Chinese admiral Cheng Ho discovered nutmeg during his travels and established trade routes. Herbalist Li Shizhen later included nutmeg in his Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica), recognizing its uses in traditional medicine. Despite challenges from European powers, Malaysia's nutmeg industry flourished under Asian and European influences.
